Elsbeth, journey of an eccentric investigator

In this spin-off of The Good Wifeto be discovered this Wednesday on TF1, Carrie Preston takes over the role of Elsbeth Tascioni, an original lawyer converted into a sleuth.

Elsbeth may be a new series, but its main character has existed for almost fifteen years! Active from time to time alongside Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) in the unforgettable legal series The Good Wifethen Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) in her no less excellent spin-off The Good FightElsbeth Tascioni, played by Carrie Preston, is a lawyer, eccentric, daring, pugnacious, brilliant, passionate about investigations, but always a bit dissident. At the dawn of fifty, she left Chicago for New York, where she embarked on a second career, that of an investigator, no longer serving civilians, but the police, even the police force. Another room, another atmosphere…

« Certainly, but Robert and Michelle King (authors of the first series, here producers, Editor’s note) were looking for a way to highlight my character in a program that both resembles him and responds to the public’s desire to give him more importance. I didn’t expect it. Reconnect with Elsbeth, dig deeper into her character, spread her wings in a different context and shoot in New York, where I live, rejoices ! »confided the actress at the Monte-Carlo Festival.

Oily dapper

Fans of The Good Wife (2009-2016) and The Good Fight (2017-2022) will inevitably be disappointed. We should in fact not expect intrigues as dense as those developed in the two previous series, where the trial scenes, the ego struggles, the management of successive crises, the victories, the mise en abyme of the changeover in Trumpist America, reversals of fortune and personal trajectories marked an absolute mastery of the mechanisms of the judicial series.

Elsbeth is much more classic in its conception, consensual in its dialogues and agreed in the treatment of its situations. As if the Kings, bound by financial imperatives, had given in to the popular, in the style of a detective comedy without scope tinged with a sitcom from the 1980s. All that’s missing is the pre-recorded laughter. However, it seduces – at least for a few episodes – for the comedy tone of the whole and the talent of Carrie Preston in wearing a character in total counterpoint with the methods and austerity of the uniforms of the NYPD.

Dapper oily without filter, she is afraid of nothing, loves opera, pink and stopping bad guys. She surprises with her oddities and willingly plays candid before shaking everyone’s certainties (cops, criminals, politicians, etc.), turning out to be much more insightful and clever than one would have said. She also embodies the free 50-year-old woman, this joyful and emancipated menopause that has become a major argument in the eyes of a very large female audience, with Manhattan as a setting.

She finally enters this new category of female characters, called neuroatypical, whose very personality leads to so many stumbles and funny situations. Brief. The adventures of this original to the tunes of Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and the City) retrained as a detective after too long a stay in the Midwest have borne fruit. Raised by its novelty aspect, season 1 recorded remarkable audiences in the United States. Season 2 is currently being broadcast there. She struggles to convince. What happens next is less than certain.
