The first season of the new show space fantasy of Max is coming to an end. Dune: Prophecy has managed to convince critics and fans can really hope for a season 2. But what is really going on with the creators of the series?
The series Dune: Prophecybroadcast on HBO and therefore Max in France, immerses spectators in the dense universe of Frank Herbert, well before the events recounted in Dune by Denis Villeneuve – 10,000 years exactly, just that. This daring prequel explores the genesis of the Bene Gesserit, these enigmatic sisters who manipulate history and leaders in the shadows. As the first season comes to an end, one question burns on fans' lips: will there be a season 2? Here's everything we know.
A second season already thought of?
As of now, HBO has yet to officially announce a second season for Dune: Prophecy. However, several signs indicate that the series could well continue. During a recent conference discussed by the media ComingSoonCasey Bloys, an executive at HBO, reportedly confirmed that discussions were underway for a sequel. In addition, showrunner Alison Schapker would have been responsible for sketching the broad outlines of a potential season 2.
Additional hints were given at New York Comic Con 2024, where Schapker and executive producer Jordan Goldberg discussed the importance of a multi-season story arc to fully develop the story of the Bene Gesserit. They explained that the evolution of Sisterhood required a step-by-step approach to capture the full depth of this mysterious order.
HBO's official silence can be explained by a cautious strategy. The channel is probably waiting to measure the performance of the first season, in terms of audience and critical reception, before committing to a new production. This approach is common in the industry, especially for projects as ambitious as Dune: Prophecywhich involve high costs.
Big stakes for season 2?
HBO seems to have thought big with Dune: Prophecy. Its sumptuous settings, intriguing characters and rich universe make it a work that not only tells a story, but also lays the foundations for immense potential for seasons to come. The first season disseminated numerous narrative avenues, suggesting a long-term vision, faithful to the manipulative spirit of the Bene Gesserit.
Created by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, Dune: Prophecy is inspired by the novels of Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, themselves prequels to the writings of Frank Herbert. The story primarily follows sisters Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams), key figures in the founding of the Bene Gesserit, 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet). With its complex plots, different houses and visual ambition, the series has established itself as an attempt to compete with other great fantasy epics such as House of the Dragon or The Rings of Power.

If a season 2 of Dune: Prophecy is confirmed, it is unlikely that it will arrive before 2026, given the usual production times for series of this scale. When the time comes, it should be broadcast on Max, like the first season. In the meantime, fans can hope that HBO quickly formalizes the renewal, which would help maintain the momentum around the series and avoid too long a wait.
