With its disaster scenario on a paradise island, The Palm found its audience among Netflix subscribers who ranked it number 1 of the top. However, the series is far from pleasing everyone, especially among the Spanish…
It is the most watched series of the moment on Netflix, ahead of Black Dovesrecommended at 98%. At the top of the top 10, the disaster series The Palm follows a Norwegian family who arrive at their favorite hotel on the Canary Island during the holiday season. But La Palma, a priori idyllic, contains a danger. A young Norwegian scientist discovers worrying signs concerning the volcano located in the center of the island. According to her, if the volcano were to erupt, it would be the equivalent of a gigantic mountain which would then explode into the sea, causing the deadliest tsunami the planet has ever known. Will the family manage to escape this predicted catastrophe and survive? This is the question that arises over the four episodes of the mini-series. A disaster scenario which unfortunately echoes a tragedy experienced on September 19, 2021 on the Canary Island.
The Palm : why Netflix's number 1 series is controversial
The fact that the series is inspired by drama is not to the taste of the Spaniards affected by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano (since renamed Tajogaite). Although there were no deaths, thousands of people had to be evacuated and hundreds of properties were buried by lava and ash during the 2021 eruption. On X (formerly Twitter), an Internet user is outraged that the series focuses on the consequences of the eruption on tourists instead of talking about the Palmeros who lost their homes. “I cannot believe that Netflix would even consider broadcasting such s***. Those who suffer from the tragedy of La Palma are the Norwegians, who return home with an anecdote, and not the inhabitants themselves , who still live in containers INCREDIBLE” can we read on the social network.
The Palm was written before the tragedy
However, the controversy has no reason to exist since the series had been ordered before the eruption. The film crew had to suspend her when she was about to start filming due to the volcano waking up. In addition, defenders of La Palma believe that the series has had a positive impact on the archipelago since more than a thousand extras and three hundred local technicians participated, while the series could also encourage tourists to come and discover the region.
