Thunderbolt in the PAF! The Canal+ group, unhappy with the fate imposed on it by the authorities, has decided to withdraw its four pay channels from DTT. You will have to go through the internet or another method of distribution to watch the programs of these channels.
The TNT will have to live without the group’s pay channels Canal+. From June 2025, Canal+, Canal+ Cinema, Canal+ Sport et Planet will no longer be available on the digital terrestrial television network. “ Only CANAL+ subscribers who are still on TNT will be affected », adds the company. And for those who still watch these channels on the terrestrial network, the group will offer them the “necessary equipment” to be able to continue watching the programs.
It’s shaking in the PAF
Canal+ has 700,000 people still dependent on DTT. In addition to DTT, these channels can be viewed by satellite, ADSL, fiber, via TV offers from telecom operators, and also of course with the Canal+ application on all connected screens. The two free Canal+ channels present on TNT, CNews et C Starremain in place.
This movement of anger is the result of several tax and regulatory decisions that have hit the company in recent months. The tax paid to the National Cinema Center (CNC), of which Canal+ is the main financier, has increased. Furthermore, Canal+ is also at the heart of a dispute linked to the reduced VAT from which it benefits, and which could be withdrawn.
Above all, the group intends to protest against the withdrawal of C8 of TNT. Last July, Arcom decided to withdraw its approval from the channel following countless slip-ups by star host Cyril Hanouna. C8 had accumulated 7.6 million euros in fines over the last eight years.
By removing these four channels, Canal+ causes a small earthquake and loses part of the value of DTT. But if we look at the full glass side, the disappearance of these channels will free up other slots on the network. We can also wonder about the reality of the number of viewers using TNT to watch Canal+ programs. ISP solutions or simply the application, available on a number of media, have changed habits.
-Canal+ specifies that it is present in 52 countries and had 26.8 million subscribers at the end of 2023. The group specifies that two thirds of them are “ outside French borders “. A barely veiled threat to leave France? Parent company Vivendi is preparing the listing of Canal+ on the London Stock Exchange on December 16…
