Between seasons 4 and 5, the series The Scott Brothers takes a leap in time. The plot propels the characters four years into the future, skipping their college years. But then, why did the creator decide to make a time jump? The editorial staff of Serieously tell you more here.
4 years, 6 months and 2 days later… This is the title of the first episode of season 5 of Scott Brothersand also the time that passed between the end of the fourth season and the start of the fifth season. For good reason, the creator of the series used the scriptwriting process of time jump (or “time jump” in French) and thus moved the plot forward a few years.
An idea “unprecedented » more « risky » pour The Scott Brothers
« I think it's unprecedented. That's one of the reasons it appealed to me, but as soon as you come up with an angle or a plot that's unprecedented, it's also risky » declared Mark Schwahncreator of the teen drama The Scott Brothersin 2008 at the Deseret News media. And, for good reason, if this has since become commonplace in the series, it was not yet commonplace at the time.
So, if the managers of the channel and the studio were reluctant at first, they ended up being convinced. Especially since this idea has been running through Mark Schwahn's head since even before season 4which follows Lucas, Nathan, Peyton, Brooke and Haley's final months at Tree Hill High School.
And, for good reason, the American television channel The WB – who broadcast The Scott Brothers since 2003 – was dissolved in 2006, at the end of the third season, to make way for The CW. Mark Schwahn then had to convince the bosses of the CW to keep his series on their program schedule, which worked. And that's where he had the famous idea of leaping into the future!
“I thought it was brilliant” Bethany Joy Lenz (Haley dans The Scott Brothers)
Knowing that the heroes of Scott Brothers were soon to leave high school to go to university, the creator of the series wished ignore the four years at university of Lucas, Nathan and the whole gang – even if the series does not hesitate to offer flashback scenes from season 5. Especially since the transition from high school to university is often fatal for a teen drama…
Interviewed by Entertainment Weekly in 2022, Bethany Joy Lenz, Hilarie Burton Morgan et Sophia Bush gave their opinion about the famous time jump in The Scott Brothers. “I thought it was brilliant” declared Haley's interpreter James Scott.
For her part, the one who lends her features to Brooke Davis confided: « We were truly entering an era where virtually no group of friends went to the same university. It's just not something that's done. This might have happened in our parents' time, but things were different and we felt like we had to break the mold because it wasn't practical.”.
For her part, Hilarie Burton Morgan believes that this allowed the actors to be closer to their characters in terms of ages and therefore life experience.
