Hardcore band Knocked Loose rocked the set Jimmy Kimmel Live! on November 26 with a daring performance of his single Suffocateaccompanied by Poppy. If this performance marked an important moment for the visibility of Metalcore on a mainstream platform, it also divided spectators.

A performance that sparks debate

Known for their style mixing hardcore and metalcore, Knocked Loose delivered an energetic performance that wasn't to everyone's taste. Some spectators accustomed to more traditional musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live! expressed their disapproval on social media.

A comment on Facebook illustrates this frustration: “I was watching the show with my teenage son. At the end of the third 'JUNT' of the guitars, he was in tears. This kind of music has no place in a family show.”

Another viewer added: “If it’s music, I still prefer to read the lyrics. Shouting is not singing. Anyone can scream and get paid for it.”

A wave of support for Knocked Loose

Despite the criticism, many fans and musicians applauded the performance for highlighting the metalcore scene. Misha Mansoor of Periphery said: “It’s incredible to see this. And what a legitimate group too!” The group Attack Attack! described the moment as “big victory for heavy music.”

Brendan Murphy of Counterparts also shared a personal memory: “When we filmed together, Knocked Loose was sleeping on the floor at my parents' house. Last night my parents watched them on Jimmy Kimmel. It’s crazy!”
