Breakup confirmed for Canal+ and Disney+

The divorce is truly complete between Disney and Canal+. After the announcement on November 5, the French channel has just officially confirmed the news to its users.

Divorce on December 31, 2024

The streaming platform Mickey had announced his departure from Canal+, as of January 1, 2025. For his part, the Frenchman has just informed his subscribers of the end of distribution of Little Mouse content via a message displayed on the Canal subscriber area.

In the message we can read in particular We inform you of the cessation of the distribution of the Disney Channel, Disney Channel+1, Disney Junior, National Geographic, National Geographic Wild and the Disney+ service in our offers as of December 31, 2024.

Breakup confirmed for Canal+ and Disney+

Indeed, the end of the partnership involves the withdrawal of the numerous films it owns. Thus Disney, Marvel or Pixar will no longer be broadcast on Canal+ six months after their theatrical release. For new releases, you will therefore have to wait 17 months after their theatrical release, in accordance with the media chronology.

From January 1, 2025, Canal+ customers will no longer be able to watch our new films, nor access Disney+ (streaming platform integrated into certain offers, editor’s note) nor our television channels via their subscription../.. However, all of our productions – films, series, documentaries – will remain accessible to all directly on Disney+.

No surprise effect

At the end of 2019, Canal+ managed to sign an exclusive distribution agreement for Disney+. A masterstroke just a few months before its launch in . However, this one – which expires at the end of December – included three parts : the integration of Disney+ into Canal’s offerings, priority broadcasting of Disney films on Canal+ and the distribution of the Disney Channel, Disney Junior, National Geographic, National Geographic Wild, Voyage and Fox Play channels.

However, five years is an eternity in the world of streaming! Over this period, the market has evolved considerably, notably with the arrival of very large players in the world of streaming, but also new new content rivaling Jedis or superheroes. Under these conditions, Disney has therefore regained its freedombut this decision is hardly surprising, their relationship having been largely compromised for several months for strategic and of course financial issues.
