One theory assumes that one of the characters in Rings of Power could well be the King of the Dead of Lord of the Rings.
The first two seasons of Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video ended on a bittersweet note. If the first season had somewhat succeeded in keeping the public in suspense thanks to a treasure hunt around the real identity of Sauron, the second season, for its part, completely lost its way in outrageous fan-service and a false suspense over the question of the Stranger’s real name.
Despite this, we have already started to wonder about what the third season of the series could offer. Rings of Power. We suspect that the showrunners will play with our nerves regarding the identity of the Dark Wizard, and that Sauron/Annatar/Halbrand will begin his business of distributing the rings of power to Men. And precisely, as he approaches the kingdom of Numenor, it could well be that among the Men there is already the one who will become one of the key characters of Tolkien’s novels, very popular with fans: the King of the Dead.
Rings of power playing necromancers
When Aragorn met the King of the Dead in the movie Return of the Kinghe is under the influence of a curse that has trapped him and his subjects in the Paths of the Dead for centuries. He was cursed by Isildur during the Second Age (i.e. when the series takes place the Rings of Power) because, despite the promise made to Isildur to join him in the fight against Evil, the King allied himself with the forces of Sauron instead of defending Men.
After his death and that of his followers, all these beautiful people found themselves stranded in the mazes of the Haunted Mountain. It was only after swearing loyalty to Aragorn, and helping him defeat the Corsairs of Umbar before joining Minas Tirith, that the King of the Dead and his army of ghosts were freed from their curse and were able to find peace in the afterlife.
Profession: future king of the dead
Many clues seem to indicate that the future King of the Dead could well already be present in the series the Rings of Poweret several elements point towards the character of Théo. This one is a non-canonical character, created for the needs of the Amazon series.
First of all, Theo seems to have a connection to the Evil Lord. When he discovered the hilt of Sauron’s sword, it had a strange hypnotic effect on him. In addition, the young man is from Tirharad, a village which is technically located in the lands of Mordor, and which was home to former followers of Sauron. It could therefore be that the inhabitants of the village could ultimately (re)become supporters of the Lord of Evil.
Theo also suffered an ordeal which fueled his hatred: the death of his mother provoked in him a deep anger directed towards Arondir, and towards the elves in general. This resentment led him to become closer to the wild men, who are sympathizers of Sauron. Once again, Théo seems to be destined to join the dark side of the Force one way or another.
Additionally, Theo forged a bond of friendship with Isildur, and the two remained quite close as long as Isildur was at large. However, both were separated, Elendil’s son left the scene, which Theo experienced as a betrayal. We can see the beginnings of a conflictual relationship between these two characters.even the announcement of a future treachery on the part of Théo.
Another element suggests that Théo could have a tragic destiny. We don’t know the young man’s father, but Arondir nicknamed him during season 2 “Lord of Pelargir”. We know the love of showrunners for clues scattered with the wind, and it was enough to assume that Théo could indeed be the heir of a royal lineagepossibly of a lineage from the Southlands. This title of Lord would allow him to wear a crown, making him a King (and therefore the future King of the Dead).
Theo’s attraction to darkness, his heavy past, the fact that he comes from a village of former followers of Sauron, and the fact that he and Isildur seem to take radically opposite paths… All this makes him the ideal candidate to become the King of the Dead. And it’s a more credible theory than those that state he could become the Mouth of Sauron or a Nazgûl, simply because he seems too young to take on such roles.
For the moment, season 3 of Rings of Power has no release date.
