showrunner Terence Winter reflects on his “departure” from the series with Stallone

Producer and screenwriter Terence Winter returned to his departure as showrunner of Tulsa Kingthe series created by Taylor Sheridan and worn by Sylvester Stallone.

After Yellowstone In 2018, Taylor Sheridan wasted no time adding another headline title to his CV: Tulsa King. In addition to having brought Sylvester Stallone back into the spotlight, this Paramount+ series also offered him his first real turn towards the small screen, moreover in a role of old mafioso on the comeback tailor-made for him. The series was a great success, and as proof, Paramount renewed it in November 2022before the first season had even finished its weekly broadcast in the United States.

All the lights seemed green for Sheridan’s new creation, except behind the scenes where tensions with showrunner Terence Winter pushed the latter to slam the door (although agenda conflicts were cited at that time). It is in February 2023 that Deadline announced the news, when season 1 of Tulsa King began its broadcast in .

But (small) twist: a year after his departure, Terence Winter finally returned to service, this time as screenwriter and executive producer. Season 2 therefore began production without an official showrunner, but under the supervision of new director and executive producer Craig Zisk. Now that season 2 has started and season 3 will soon be on everyone’s lips, Terence Winter has returned to this game of musical chairs which, according to him, has not nothing to do with any popcorn drama.

WINTER IS LEAVING

In the podcast BingeworthyTerence Winter wanted to play down his departure from Tulsa Kingwhile confirming that creative differences were at the heart of this momentary quarrel:

“I inherited the show from Taylor Sheridan and I think he probably would have done things differently. But what made me do it was being kind of told, “Okay, take this and deal with it, it’s yours.” It is on this postulate that we agreed. But when I found out that they wanted to make changes that I didn’t agree with, I said, “You know what, it’s your show, you created it, and I’m going to pass to something else, as was originally planned.” And then I think they were like, “Actually, this works.” […]

Taylor definitely has another 19 series to worry about. And then we had our ‘kumbaya’ moment [de bonne entente, ndlr] and we went back to work. So it’s not as dramatic as it seems, that’s about it. Once again, having created series myself [Boardwalk Empire et Vinyl, ndlr]I totally respect that someone can have a different vision – you and I can have a different approach to the same thing. And if you thought of it in the first place, you have the right to do whatever you want with it. »

Back in the business writersroom

In the end, all is well ends keep going well. For the moment, no official announcement has been made, but Stallone, always so active and talkative on Instagram, confirmed that they are indeed in the process of working on season 3 of Tulsa King. A priori, Terence Winter should therefore keep his double role as screenwriter and executive producer, while continuing to “sing Kumbaya” with Sheridan.

As for season 2, it continues to be broadcast on the Paramount+ platform, with one episode per week since September 15. Season 1 is also broadcast on the M6 channel in France every Tuesday in the early evening since October 8.
