Don’t miss what is undoubtedly one of the best series of this school year. 1996. Russian player Kasparov faces Deep Blue, a computer designed by IBM. Man triumphs over machine. But the leaders of IBM, a company whose stock is falling dangerously and who dream of a huge publicity stunt, propose a revenge in New York for the tidy sum of a million dollars. Initially reluctant Kasparov, supported as always by his mother, accepts this rematch in six duels. But behind the scenes, a brilliant computer scientist nicknamed PC by his colleagues and working under the orders of a particularly pushy executive, boosts Deep Blue to transform it into a formidable war machine. And from the first games, Kasparov stumbles, loses well and doubts himself…

And this series which won the grand prize in the international competition at Séries Mania last March is inspired by a true story…

Totally deserved. Breathtaking convergence of a scenario which, in six episodes, dissects down to the smallest truthful details and with just the right amount of fictional momentum, this sharp and captivating face-to-face. A narrative division which is matched by the excellence of the direction of Yan England (1:54 in the cinema), a Quebec filmmaker. Like pawns on a chessboard, his camera moves with method and precision, combining nervous tracking shots and conquering diagonals. Its production crisscrosses and surrounds its protagonists like an extension of their minds. It’s sharp, nervous and doesn’t let you go for a single second. In the lead role, Christian Cooke, an impressive British actor, is the ultimate asset of this duel. After “The Queen’s Game”, chess is amazing (pun intended!!) once again in this series. Don’t miss it.

Let’s leave New York for Gotham City with “The Penguin” available on the Max platform

Everyone knows the Penguin, one of Batman’s many sworn enemies. Less is known about its origins. This eight-episode mini-series looks back on his rise. When he executes the heir of a mafia clan, OZ, his first nickname, triggers a gang war, the slightest embers of which he will fan thanks to his perfidious intelligence and his innate sense of betrayal.

No muscular hero in latex in this Scorsese-style tragedy by Matt Reeves (last and best Batman in cinema). Only this solitary anti-hero, denigrated and humiliated since his childhood, fascinates the authors here. Because the Penguin is Othello’s Iago, deceit in its purest form, born from the crass wickedness of human hope. A Marxist hero, kept by everyone at the bottom of the social scale (the opposite of Bruce Wayne, a rich kid) and who will move up by eliminating his adversaries one by one. A dark series carried by Colin Farrell’s acting, much less sexy than usual but no less excellent.
