Wazemmes is my neighborhood, no one can say anything bad about it! » When the master’s students in Writing, Letters and Digital Editions went to meet the people of Wazemmes, they came across Jacqueline Verstraete, the former hall concierge. A character who, like many others, nourishes the pages of a book to be published in the fall, entirely devoted to the Wazemmes district, its history, its culture, its artists, its streets, its village atmosphere…October is the season for beautiful books “, enlightened Chaïma Belkacemi, student and distribution manager at Éditions de l’Horloge. L’Horloge is the publishing house created at the Catholic University of Lille, almost at the same time as this master’s degree.

Long harvest work

Wazemmes, vibrant and spicy. Vibrant, because over the pages, we feels the heartbeat of the neighborhood and its inhabitants. Spicy, because it tells the flavors of the halls and the market from the Place de la Nouvelle-Aventure.

Every other full page Argentinian tango dancers at Cheval Blanc. Pierre Mauroy, former mayor of Lille, on a gourmet stroll. A double page on the Soup Festival, 2002 edition. THE colorful houses on Durnerin Street. And then the street art, the Maison Folie… There was a long work to collect testimonies but also long days dusting off local or departmental archives.

We manage Éditions de l’Horloge like a small businesswelcomes the student. Everything is self-funded. » From the price to be defined to the contact to be made with independent bookstores, it is the whole little world of publishing with which they are now familiar.

“Wazemmes vibrant and spicy” was published in 500 copies (Éditions de l’Horloge). In bookstores from October 15, 2024. €35.
