As the end of the school year approaches, an important event in the lives of (mostly American) teenagers is looming! It’s prom. Although this evening is generally rather rare in France, it constitutes a real rite of passage in the United States. If some people fear this stage, others, on the contrary, look forward to it and glorify it. The evening of the prom has also inspired multiple films and series, which have made this night a horror, comedy or even love story. But are these stories always worth it? Télé-Loisirs particularly asked the question for the film One night datethe new comedy available on Disney+!
What are you talking about One night datethe new teen comedy from Disney+?
Since they were young, two best friends, Jess (Antonia Gentry) and Hannah (Julia Lester) have only one dream: to have a perfect prom! They even made a blood oath to promise that this night would become a memorable event. But the day before the big day, the two young girls break up with their partners. Determined not to break this promise, they take on the challenge of finding their replacements, despite the challenges encountered along the way. One night date is a good American comedy, friendly and light, where funny situations follow one another. The major target of this feature film undoubtedly remains young adults and certain scenes are light years away from subtlety. Like the main character, most of the time completely stupid, like when he puts his head in a condom in order to talk to young people about sexuality. A cliché too often present in American films for teenagers.

One night date with the star of Ginny & Georgia : a comedy about friendship but which lacks depth
Entertaining, One night date shows to what extent the quest for prom turns into an obsession among certain high school girls. However, under this light dose of comedy and sometimes unrefined scenes, One night date is ultimately more interested in friendship than love… and that’s a good thing! The film highlights the importance of accepting yourself and learning to know yourself. Things of value are often right under our noses and the grass is rarely greener elsewhere, contrary to what we might think. On the casting side, if Antonia Gentry has proven herself in the very good series Ginny & Georgia from Netflix, she unfortunately lacks charisma here. We are less attached to her and we prefer to focus on Julia Lester, who we have spotted in recent years in the series High School Musical from Disney+. In this film, she thus embodies a character that is fresh, touching and full of energy. One night date therefore entertains but nevertheless lacks sparks and a richer and deeper intrigue to completely carry us away.
