Indigenous author Shayne Michael has just been crowned winner of the 6th One City One Book competition for his children’s book Our roots. It was the young readers of the Machin Club who chose it, citing in particular its originality and the importance of the themes covered.

This is great news. I didn’t intend to write, I came to Quebec to improve my French says author Wolastoqiyik, originally from New Brunswick, based in Quebec since 2012. Now, to see that I am the winner of an award, I like this image of seeing that no matter what path you take, there is always something beautiful that can appear.

Our Roots is a collection of portraits of modern and historical figures who left their mark on their nation. Written in French, English and indigenous languages, these portraits represent the 11 indigenous nations of Quebec.

I find it very important for this generation to rub shoulders with future indigenous people.adds Mr. Michael. For me, it’s an asset: it’s their future, and having more sources of inspiration, more benchmarks, more models to follow is important. It’s about creating new perspectives or breaking stereotypes.

Our Roots will be distributed to 1,000 6th grade students in Quebec and Wendake.
