Death of former beach volleyball player Martin Laciga

The former beach volleyball player, who lived for several years in the canton of Fribourg, died at the age of 48.

In agreement with the family, Swiss Volley announces the disappearance of Martin Laciga, who died Tuesday at the age of 48. With his brother Paul, they had formed a formidable pair in beach volleyball.

Martin Laciga is considered one of the pioneers of beach volleyball in Switzerland and was one of the most talented Swiss players of all time. For 18 years, he achieved numerous international successes and contributed to the development of beach volleyball.

World number 1 in 1999, vice-world champion the same year, triple European champion, double European vice-champion, triple Swiss champion, with several rankings in the top 10 at the Olympic Games and elected Swiss sportsman of the n the team year 1999, Martin Laciga achieved legendary performances for Swiss beach volleyball.

Together with his brother Paul, the Seelander played a key role in the development of beach volleyball. The two brothers marked the scene from 1995 to 2004. Martin Laciga also enjoyed success with his subsequent partners, Markus Egger, Jan Schneider and Jefferson Bellaguarda.

Ten years ago, Martin Laciga put an end to his active career as a beach volleyball player. He got involved off the field for the sport that was so close to his heart.

The last weeks of Martin Laciga were marked by a severe acute depression. Tinu’s last words: “I just wanted to play and have fun. I had no more strength for this fight.
