A 51-year-old woman died Sunday evening in Lacanau, after being carried away by a baïne with two of her children. Between June 1 and August 2, 598 drownings took place in France, resulting in 177 deaths.
Sunday evening, while a woman and two of her children were bathing on the central beach of Lacanau, in Gironde, they were carried away by a bath, according to information from South West and France Bleu confirmed by the town hall to BFMTV.com.
If the two children came out unscathed, the woman, aged 51, died despite the intervention of the emergency services. According to France Bleu, she was trying to help her children when she was taken away.
177 drowning deaths since June 1
The Gironde prefecture had issued an alert for this weekend, classified as “maximum risk for the currents of baïnes”. These water reservoirs, created by the movement of the tides, are recurrent on the Atlantic coast. They generate a very strong current offshore, so it is advisable, when you are caught in a baïne, not to try to fight but to let yourself float until you get out of the area.
Between June 1 and August 2, 2023, Public Health France (SPF) recorded 598 drownings in France, including 177 deaths. While the total number of drownings over this period is down 25% compared to 2021, which SPF attributes in particular to the gloomy weather in the second half of July, the number of deaths remains stable.
The number of deaths related to all drownings therefore increases, from 22% in 2021 to 30% in 2023. These deaths concern adults in 9 out of 10 cases.
