The managing director of the Chimay circuit, Jean Yernaux, expressed his deep sadness on Monday after the death of two pilots during the weekend during Chimay Classic Bikes. At the same time, he dismissed the hypothesis of a safety problem on the circuit.
The Chimay circuit is a road circuit approved according to a protocol placed under the aegis of the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), recalled the managing director. According to the latter, new safety devices have also been installed on the circuit recently. “To date, it is thus without doubt one of the most secure road circuits in Europe.“, affirmed Jean Yernaux.
Two separate accidents
According to the managing director, a road circuit remains a road circuit. “That is to say a circuit where a racing incident can have more serious consequences than on a permanent circuit, designed to encourage less serious falls., said Jean Yernaux. According to him, however, road courses offer racing characteristics closer to the DNA of motorcycle road racing.
The two deaths occurred on Sunday within hours of each other. The first is related to a loss of control followed by a collision between two motorcycles. The second occurred during a collective fall at the start of the race.
