Death of former MP Habib Sadek

Former MP Habib Sadek, one of the leading figures of the Lebanese left, died on Saturday at the age of 92 following a long illness.

Habib Sadek had played a leading role during the historic phase that had paved the way in the early 2000s for the Cedar Revolution of 2005. He had notably founded with a group of intellectuals – including Samir Kassir in particular – the Democratic Left which brought together left-wing academics and intellectuals who had espoused the theses of sovereigntist parties and currents, taking a stand against the Syrian occupation and integrating into what would become the March 14 current.

He had been elected MP for Nabatieh in 1992 on the list sponsored by Nabih Berry. However, he had to withdraw from the Berry bloc to position himself as an independent deputy. Habib Sadek was president of the Cultural Center of South Lebanon. He was the author of many political and literary works.
