An explosion sounded this Wednesday around 1:40 p.m. in a retention pit located in a production workshop at the Butachimie plant, located in Chalampé. The results of this accident report five people injured, mainly burns, and two involved. The company immediately put in place the measures provided for in its internal operation plan (POI) with regard to personal assistance. The internal intervention teams (firefighters and occupational physician) intervened immediately and the emergency services (SIS firefighters and Samu) were alerted and returned to the site. The victims were taken care of and transported in relative emergency to hospitals in the area.
The incident, on this site classified as Seveso high threshold, was quickly brought under control and the Haut-Rhin prefecture very quickly specified that “the first elements suggest that there is no danger for the population”. “The incident is under control. We will make every effort to determine the causes, in collaboration with the various experts”, indicated Hervé Hubert, the plant manager. Butachimie is a production site for nylon components. The Chalampé plant thus produces 35% of the world’s adiponitrile. The site is currently shut down for regulatory checks, inspections and maintenance work (see elsewhere).
A psychological cell
According to a press release from the site management, “the families of the injured have been notified and the management is regularly informed of the state of health of its employees. A psychological unit has been set up to support all the people affected by this accident. And the press release specifies that “the management has contacted the services of the prefecture, the Dreal and the gendarmerie to keep them continuously informed of the situation”.
