A splendid Benjamin Dominguez Volley allowed Bologna to grab a point at Empoli as they appeared to be suffering from a Champions League hangover.

The Rossoblu were still celebrating their first ever Champions League win in midweek against Borussia Dortmund, plus a string of positive Serie A results, although Riccardo Orsolini was out with a thigh injury. Empoli had started the season so well, but had only scraped one point from the last six rounds and were missing Nicolas Haas, Ola Solbakken, Saba Sazonov, Tyronne Ebuehi and Pietro Pellegri.

See how it went on the live blog.

The hosts opened the scoring after 24 minutes when Jacopo Fazzini’s sliding pass sent Giuseppe Pezzella down the left, flashing a ball across the face of goal which Lorenzo Colombo volleyed in to head home from six yards at the near post. In the follow-up, he also ended up crashing into Lukasz Skorupski, but only after getting the ball.

Devis Vasquez beat helplessly into a corner and on the next return, Bologna got the equalizer thanks to a fantastic right-footed volley from Benjamin Dominguez at the back post from Charalampos Lykogiannis’ cross.

Colombo only managed to pass a Fazzini cross from five yards out, allowing Skorupski to tap it in, while Devis Vasquez volleyed in to get a glove to Jens Odgaard’s hard-deflecting strike from the edge of the area.

There was a huge opportunity for Bologna when Vasquez needed a reaction save on Sam Beukema’s volley from six yards out from a Juan Miranda cross.

Mattia Viti made a save by holding his upper thigh in extra time, so Empoli were for all intents and purposes down to 10 men for the final minutes.
