Death of Emile: the child will ultimately not be buried in Vernet but in Bouches-du-Rhône

the essential
Emile, the 2-year-old child reported missing from Le Vernet in the Alpes de Haute-Provence and found dead on March 30, 2024, will not be buried in the village. The town refused a family vault to his parents. Emile will be buried in Bouches-du-Rhône.

Little Emile will not rest at Le Vernet for eternity. The child’s parents, Marie and Colomban Soleil, finally decided to bury their little boy in La Bouilladisse, the town of Bouches-du-Rhône where they live.

Their initial choice was to bury Emile in the Haut-Vernet cemetery, the place where the child had disappeared on vacation and where the maternal grandparents own a house. The law actually allows one to be buried in the town where one died.

After the municipality’s agreement, the parents expressed the wish to have a family vault to rest alongside Emile after their death. This time, the municipality rejected the request. A decision severely criticized by the lawyer for Emile’s parents: “As if we could humanly and morally separate the parents from their missing child in death”, he indicates in a press release relayed by BFM DICI.

Marie and Colomban Soleil believe that they “are not welcome” in Haut-Vernet, the press release continues. They want their son to be buried “in peace”. Their choice is made: it will be at La Bouilladisse.

A mass on February 8

In memory of Emile, a mass will be celebrated at the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine basilica in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume on Saturday February 8 at 10 a.m. The public who wishes will be able to attend the ceremony and registers of condolences will be made available.
