REPORTING. “Everything was in order, how is this possible?”, astonishment and incomprehension after the fire in an Asian restaurant

the essential
Located in the northern area of , Wok 82, with its capacity of 400 seats, was due to open… in the coming days. It was completely ravaged by flames during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. The disaster was contained, but in the early morning there was disbelief.

Astonishment, incomprehension, and sadness yesterday morning at the northern gates of Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne), in front of what remained of the future Wok 82 restaurant, ravaged by flames during the night, a compressed mass of iron, wool glass and other insulators still smoking. Located between the Sodeco factory and the Aviva kitchen manufacturer, in the area which formerly housed the Privilège nightclub, this Asian restaurant was to open… next week, “after the passage of the safety commission”, assured the couple yesterday morning of managers, who arrived on site with their daughter a little before 8 a.m. visibly dismayed.

Wok 82 had (we have to speak in the imperfect tense) an area of some 1,000 square meters, or “a capacity of 400 place settings”, according to the manager. She herself was still on the scene on Wednesday around 4:15 p.m., “it was me who closed the door,” she assures. Warned at around 1 a.m. on Thursday, the firefighters deployed major resources during the night, “especially to ensure that the fire does not spread into adjoining buildings, especially since there is a stock of chemicals at Sodeco that will have to be moved,” explains Renaud Plotton, head of the Montauban group, who arrived in the early morning to take over from his comrades.

Mission accomplished, the fire was contained to the restaurant alone, even if it partially affected the Aviva building. Access to the kitchen designer was also prohibited, and Zorah, one of the salespeople, looked at the scene with a disappointed look, understanding that her day was going to be “complicated”.

Alerted around 7:30 a.m., the lessor, Sébastien Lagniès, owner of all the buildings between Sodeco and Marie Blachère, was stunned. “How is this possible, the business hadn’t even opened, everything was in order, it’s unthinkable! “. With his wife, he took stock of the situation with the firefighters, the town hall, and the various authorities dispatched to the scene of the “catastrophe”.

No hypothesis was put forward yesterday as to the origin of the disaster. The building, as we said, was under construction, but this was coming to an end, the opening was imminent… The police, on the scene, launched an investigation into a fire.
