It was in a packed village hall that the Avignon-Le Pontet triathlon club recently organized its elective general meeting and celebrated its 40th anniversary. In particular, it was made official that Marine Jouanem is taking over from Karen Mornet who is expecting her second child but remains on the steering committee. To date, under the leadership of its new president, the club still attracts many athletes, recruitment is full both among adults, at the triathlon school, and among people with disabilities. Probably because of the excitement generated by the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A new niche dedicated to adapted sport
Since last year, Avignon-Le Pontet sorting
athlon has become the first inclusive club in the Paca League for adapted sports and disabled athletes. The system is very successful since many athletes are registered. The inclusive club is a program created by the French Paralympic and Sports Committee for clubs which wish to open their doors to people with disabilities and who want to be supported in this process. By the end of the 2024-2025 sports season, the objective is to support and raise awareness among 3,000 new clubs through this unique project.
-At Pontet, this group, made up of around fifteen members accompanied by their supervisors, is in full development. Last year, he only had one weekly slot, Monday evening at the Avignon swimming pool. A second slot has been obtained: Saturday, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Pontet swimming pool, thus offering more training opportunities.
The efforts of the athletes in the group bore fruit, some of them participated in the interregional and national championships, returning with medals. A great reward for their work and determination.
