The accident did not go unnoticed in Cancale (Ille-et-Vilaine). On May 19, 2023, around 1 a.m., a van left the road to violently hit the wall of a house before ending its mad dash in the garden of another home.

The vehicle catches fire

The shock had been violent. So much so that the vehicle then burst into flames in the middle of the night, in front of residents stunned by this spectacle, the consequences of which could have been dramatic.

“It must be someone I know from my daughter”

Starting with the driver of the van, strangely absent when the firefighters and police arrived. The investigators eventually found his trace but the man, aged 42, seemed to be taken aback.

He swears, it wasn’t him who was behind the wheel of his vehicle that night. “It must be someone I know from my daughter,” he explains to the police. Except that the latter consulted the register of visits to the Saint-Malo hospital.

“Bad faith”

For the justice system which examined his case on January 17, 2025, there is no room for doubt. “It was he who was driving the vehicle”, believes the public prosecutor represented by Emilie Goyet who denounces in passing “the bad faith of the gentleman”.

The defendant, absent from his trial and whose criminal record includes four entries, was sentenced by the Saint-Malo court to several fines for a total amount of 1,360 euros. He will also have to pay 1,200 euros for material and moral damage to the owner of the broken wall, who had become a civil party.
