Samsung unveiled its three new Galaxy S25s on Wednesday in San Jose (California), which rely on power, photography and obviously artificial intelligence to operate with your finger and voice.
If it was overtaken by Honor, first to release its premium smartphones with the launch of the Magic 7 Pro and Magic7 Lite at the beginning of January (China had them since the end of 2024), Samsung knows that it can always count on its own to play the leading roles. The Galaxy S25s were made official on Wednesday in San Jose (California) and they want to make a big splash.
Here are the three 2025 spearheads for the brand: the Galaxy S25, the Galaxy S25+ and the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the ultimate from Samsung.
You don’t change a design that works
From a design point of view, as for its A range, Samsung is now focusing on visual continuity, undoubtedly to give the same premium image to all its smartphones, with a few small specificities (choice of plastic, side bump, 3 or 4 sensors…). Now with all the bare photo sensors on the back, a Samsung trademark.
If they do not visually stand out from their predecessor, the Galaxy S25 has a slightly revised look. The three devices offer a common design with flat edges and rounded corners. Gone is the iconic Edge-style design or other that allowed you to identify a Galaxy at first glance. You have to turn it over to identify it. All three also undergo a generalized thinning of 0.4 mm in thickness (7.2 mm for the S25, 7.23 mm for the S25+ and 8.2 mm for the S25 Ultra).
The Galaxy S25 and the Galaxy S25+ are distinguished from each other by their adaptive 120 Hz Amoled screen size (6.2 inches for the first, 6.7 for the second). The other size difference will obviously concern the larger battery on the larger of the two. For the rest, the copy is the same, with an aluminum outline (midnight blue, light blue, gray or sea green) and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 to protect the smartphone on the front and back.
Not content with getting thinner, the Galaxy S25 Ultra – which still has its integrated S-Pen stylus – also refines its screen borders to go from 6.8 to 6.9 inches diagonally without being more bulky. It swaps the rigid side of the S24 for more roundness. It stands out with a colored titanium chassis (black, blue, gray, silver) that is more elegant and more resistant. Everything is reinforced by Gorilla Glass Armor 2 on the front, promised to be 30% more resistant and anti-reflective. The three Galaxy S25s are resistant to prolonged immersion and dust (IP68), Wifi 7 compatible, and guaranteed for seven years of Android and security updates.
Photo and power: the Galaxy S25 Ultra is seen in top form
On the photo side, the S25 Ultra remains Samsung’s absolute flagship. It still has a 200 Mpx main sensor and now a 120° ultra wide-angle 50 Mpx capable of macro (compared to 12 Mpx previously). The South Korean giant promises 34% more light captured for greater efficiency in complicated lighting. There is also a 50 MP x5 telephoto lens (also with a 100 x digital zoom) and a second 10 MP x3 telephoto lens. Great photo versatility in sight.
The Galaxy S25/S25+ only have three sensors: a 50 Mpx wide-angle, a 12 Mpx ultra-wide-angle and a 10 Mpx telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom. On the front, the selfie sensor displays 12 Mpx for everyone and the devices still offer the possibility of filming up to 8K/30 IPS.
A difference in photo, but equivalent power. This year, Samsung is making no difference and is placing its three models in the same boat: they will be boosted by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the latest Qualcomm processor optimized for South Korean uses and accompanied this year by 12 GB of RAM (from 256 GB to 1 TB of storage depending on the version). And this obviously leads to better battery management for smartphones, more options for audio, video or photos, but above all through better management of new artificial intelligence functions.
Galaxy AI 2025: more customization to be even more useful
This was one of the main innovations of the Galaxy S24. This is still the case for the next generation which includes an improved version of Galaxy AI. We find the now classic functions (photo editing, magic eraser, circle to search, translation, transcription, summary, etc.) and some welcome new features, of which Samsung’s stated objective is to make us change the way we use our smartphone.
-The audio eraser, already seen since the Pixel 8, appears to erase annoying noises from a video (noisy noise, voices, music, wind, etc.). Another function inherited from Google, Best Pose allows you to take successful group photos by choosing the best profile of each member of the group (up to 5).
But now, Samsung wants to go further with Galaxy AI and adds a more intuitive and efficient layer to make its AI a real, more personalized assistant. Voice will be a great support, as will the different AI platforms (Gemini Live, ChatGPT in the lead). Your smartphone will learn from you, from your routines, to make recommendations and suggestions based on your habits.
For this, three new features are appearing. Action Cross App will be able to perform several complex actions in a single request. You ask Gemini Live, for example, to find you a restaurant for 4 people, including one vegan, that accepts animals, within a 500 m radius, and to share the answers with the guests. The AI will search the Internet, submit proposals to you before formulating a response to send to the guests. This could also involve adding events to the calendar with itineraries, preparing a trip with a route plan, etc.
For the moment, the function is available in English, then in February in around forty languages, including French. Action Cross App works with Samsung applications (calendar, contacts, etc.), Google services (Maps, Search, Photo, Calendar, etc.), as well as Whatsapp and Spotify.
Other new AI-based features: Now Bar. Notifications are displayed at the bottom of the locked screen and provide useful information in real time (route, activities, calendar, sports results, stopwatch, etc.) that the user frequently consults or may need.
Now Brief is an interface which will compile reports taken from different applications, depending on the time (program in the morning, action during the day, report in the evening). This ranges from displaying your energy score (if you have a watch or a ring), your appointments and the weather in the morning, to essential information in the afternoon (train ticket, train schedule). plane, documents for an appointment, etc.) to the health check, the review of the day’s actions, the omissions to avoid in the evening, etc. All based on your data.
