War in Ukraine: TF1 and LCI on the ground

Liberated a little over two years ago, the town of Izioum is trying to rebuild itself. Amidst the rubble, brand new businesses are emerging to revive economic activity. “The supermarkets have reopened, the central square has been repaired a little. There is a big difference with what it was before”admits a Ukrainian.

Many residents would like reconstruction to speed up. The city has lost half of its pre-war population, but 14,000 people have already returned since the liberation. “We need buildings to house people,” concedes a woman.

A duty to remember

80% of housing was damaged. Maksouda, municipal housing manager, assures that great efforts have been made, but the municipality lacks money. “The proximity to the front, first of all, worries all investors and donors. And secondly, we really have very little manpower and specialists”estimates the municipal official.

In a building, where 50 people died, reconstruction is a question. The place could be transformed into a monument in tribute to the victims. Some residents, however, do not want the city to become locked in its past. Opinions differ and learning to live together again will take just as long as rebuilding the city.
