The American Ben Shelton (20th) qualified this Wednesday for the second time in his young career for the semi-finals of a Grand Slam, thanks to his victory in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (55th).
Winner 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), the native of Atlanta (Georgia) will face in the semi-finals the winner of the match between the defending champion Jannik Sinner (1st) and the Australian Alex De Minaur (8th), scheduled later in the evening in Melbourne.
And dominant Sonego ce Wednesday on the court of Rod Laver Arena, Shelton at 22 years old, offered himself his second semi-final in major tournaments, after that of 2023 at the US Open.
-The 29-year-old Italian was playing his first Grand Slam quarter-final. Winner of the last duel against Shelton in the 1st round of Roland-Garros in 2023, he is now down 2-1 in his direct confrontations with the American left-hander, after having lost in 2022 in Cincinnati, already on hard.
Sonego however, offered a long resistance to Sheltonwho took almost four hours to defeat him.
