Ross Ulbricht obtains presidential pardon

As he announced, Donald Trump signed an executive order that ends the incarceration of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road.

“I just called Ross William Ulbricht’s mother to let her know that in her honor and that of the Libertarian Movement, which has supported me so strongly, I had the pleasure of signing a full pardon and unconditionally for her son, Ross. The scum who worked to condemn him were some of the same fanatics involved in the modern politicization of the government against me. He was sentenced to two life sentences plus 40 years. Ridiculous ! » – Donald Trump

The site Silk Road operated at least between January 2011 and October 2013, the date of Ross Ulbricht’s arrest in San Francisco. Using the Tor network, which allows anonymous communication, it allowed Internet users to acquire illicit products in exchange for bitcoins.

These are forum posts. Bitcointalk which made it possible to identify and arrest Ross Ulbricht. Based on the principle that the founder of Silk Road had probably sought to make the existence of his platform known when it was created, Gary Alford, special agent of the American tax authorities, had started by carrying out a Google search on the Tor URL of Silk Road by limiting the results to pages referenced before January 31, 2011, the presumed date of the site’s launch. He then came across a message signed by a certain Altoid posted on the forum Bitcointalk on January 29, 2011. The original message had been deleted but several forum users had cited it in a response:

“What a great yarn! You guys have some amazing ideas. Has anyone seen Silk Road yet? It’s like an anonymous amazon.com. I don’t think they have heroin, but they sell other stuff. They basically use Bitcoin and Tor to negotiate anonymous transactions. It’s at this address: http://tydgccykixpbu6uz.onion. Those unfamiliar with Tor can go to silkroad420.wordpress.com for instructions on how to access .onion sites. Tell me what you think.” – Altoid

Gary Alford then took a close interest in this user and, in his message history, he came across a job ad for a developer. This ad indicated a reply address: [email protected].

From then on the investigator turned to Google who had provided him with a copy of everything contained in the account. Several emails confirmed that it was the same Altoidand conversation history Gtalk revealed orders for equipment used to cultivate hallucinogenic mushrooms.

For the investigators, the doubt was definitively removed when Ulbricht was arrested, who had made another error: that of keeping on his laptop a copy of some of his work conversations, until then undetectable since they were encrypted with Torchat.

Convicted of money laundering, drug trafficking, criminal enterprise and computer hacking, Ross Ulbricht, creator of the site, was sentenced on May 29, 2015 by a New York court to two life sentences and three five, fifteen and twenty years old.

This morning, the support committee has been fighting for almost ten years to request his release, expressed its gratitude to President Trump:

“Donald Trump, words cannot express how grateful we are to him. President Trump is a man of his word and he just saved Ross’s life. ROSS IS A FREE MAN!!!!! »
