Having become one of the darlings of Hollywood, Sydney Sweeney has just joined the cast of this gothic film which promises to be absolutely promising. We tell you everything!
Sydney Sweeney chez Edgar Allan Poe
Since his appearance in the series The Handmaid’s Tale, Sydney Sweeney has become a real star in Hollywood. Her role as Cassie in the series Euphoria produced by HBO and A24 increased her fame tenfold, and she has since been seen by Quentin Tarantino as well as in the first season of The White Lotus. If she herself laughs at her appearance in the catastrophic Madame Webthe 27-year-old young woman doesn’t have too much to worry about. Her undeniable talent as an actress and her model physique have allowed her to become essential and her name alone helps attract crowds.
We learn today in Deadline what Sydney Sweeney is currently in talks to star in a new adaptation of the novella The Mask of the Red Death d’Edgar Allan Poepublished in the collection New Extraordinary Storiestranslated into French by Charles Baudelaire. Telling the story of Prince Prospero who locked himself in an abbey in order to escape an epidemic of plague, this major novella of the Gothic movement has been adapted for cinema several times, notably by Roger Corman in 1964with legendary actor Vincent Price in the lead role.
-Presented as a “free adaptation, both dark and comic“the film will be written by Charlie Polinger and co-produced by the A24 studio, well known to fans of independent and genre cinema. This announcement seems to confirm a sort of rivalry of the gothic genre in Hollywood. In fact, after Nosferatu by Robert Eggers, which starred Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skargård in the roles of Ellen Hutter and Count Orlok, several films resurrect old figures of Gothic cinema and literature. We are thinking in particular of Wolf Man by Leigh Whannell, which has just been released in theaters and which is much criticized, but also The Bride the Maggie Gyllenhaalscheduled for October 2025 and which will offer a rereading of the classic The Bride of Frankenstein by James Whale, who inspired Tim Burton so much.
