A dry and harsh cold prevailed over the United States and Quebec. It reached -33°C in Montreal (Quebec), -22°C in Chicago and -11°C in Washington. These values are not records. On the other hand, the cold went down to the south with -2 to -4°C in Texas on the coast. In contact with a disturbance circulating over the Gulf of Mexico, snow falls unusually at Lake Jackson with -2°C, in Houston with -4°C and even in New Orleans with +1°C. Snow also reached the Mississippi coast with -1°C in Mobile.

130-year snow record possibly broken
-American meteorologists were expecting an extremely rare snowfall this Tuesday in these coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico. “An event that only happens once in a lifetime,” according to American meteorologists, and even more, since this snowfall could reach or exceed the historical reference level of the year 1895.
“Winter storm” warnings have been issued and extend from the U.S.-Mexico border to Duval County, Florida. 3 to 5 inches of snow is forecast for Houston, Texas, 2 to 5 inches for New Orleans, and up to 2 inches along western Florida through Wednesday evening. Inland areas of Louisiana could receive up to 5 inches, while Tallahassee, Florida, is expected to receive up to 2 inches. If true, it would be the largest snowstorm on the Gulf Coast in 130 years, in 1895, when 8 inches of snow fell in New Orleans.
