Australian Open Quarterfinals Preview: Jannik Sinner vs Alex de Minaur, Iga Swiatek vs Emma Navarro, Madison Keys vs Elina Svitolina – Open 6ème

Madison Keys vs. Elina Svitolina

Once upon a time, mid-round matches between these two at Grand Slams seemed poised to become a tradition. In 2017 and 2019, Keys and Svitolina met twice in the fourth round of the US Open and once in the fourth round of the Australian Open. Svitolina won twice and Keys once.

But the budding rivalry did not continue to escalate. Their most recent match, won by Keys, took place in Adelaide in 2022.

Now they will face off again, with a place in a Grand Slam semifinal on the line. As is usually the case for players who have made it this far in a major tournament, everyone is tuning in and plays inspired tennis. Keys has won nine straight matches and she cruised past No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina in the third set Monday. Svitolina’s shots weren’t that spectacular, but she played with maximum emotion and motivation, and she eliminated her own seed, Jasmine Paolini, 6-0 in the third.

Keys noticed.

“Honestly, I was so impressed,” she said of Svitolina’s aggressive play in her win over Paolini. “She was really looking for her shots and hitting incredible forehands. I definitely think it won’t be the typical match we’ve had in the past.
