Liverpool take the lead with victory over in the Champions League

Liverpool maintained their perfect run in the UEFA Champions League by beating 2-1, taking an impressive 21 points from a possible 21 in the group stage.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott allowed Arne Slot’s team to win against a Lille team reduced to ten men during the last half hour, after Aïssa Mandi received a second yellow card. Lille will now have to fight for a place in the knockout stage on the final day, having already secured their place for the play-off round.

Although now qualified, Liverpool made only defensive adjustments, resting Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, with Jarred Quansah taking their place alongside Virgil van Dijk in central defense.

With an attack consisting of Salah, Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez, Liverpool could have sealed the fate of the match during the first half, with Salah having several chances. Their first opportunity came quickly as the team made a spectacular offensive transition, going from the own side to a one-on-one opportunity for Salah within ten seconds, with Tsimikas intercepting the ball and Curtis Jones initiating the counter-attack.

Salah did not miss the opportunity and scored his 24th goal of the season.

The Egyptian winger almost doubled the lead shortly after with a similar situation, but his low shot went wide.

As Liverpool managed the game, the minutes ticked by until Díaz was brought down by Mandi on a through ball; already warned, Mandi received a red card.

Although this effectively opened the way for Liverpool for the final half hour, Lille managed to equalize in their first significant offensive action. A shot from Haraldsson found Jonathan David at the penalty spot, who scored to level the score.

It was the first goal Liverpool had conceded since Pulisic scored for AC Milan on the opening day of the group stage.
