“They will almost all be contested”: what future for Donald Trump’s first decrees?

In his inauguration speech on January 20, Donald Trump promised the “complete restoration of America” through a “series of historic executive orders.” The ax fell the same evening via around forty texts. Immigration, pardon of the Capitol insurgents, withdrawal from the agreement… Provided for by the Constitution, the decrees allow the president to bypass Congress. But there are safeguards. “Almost all of them will be challenged in court. Governing by decree is very complicated,” objects Jean-Éric Branaa, specialist in the United States and lecturer at Paris II-Assas University.

On alert, democratic organizations and states are preparing to respond. A progressive bastion, California has, for example, set aside $25 million to finance possible legal battles against the Trump administration. So, what will happen to the first steps taken by the real estate mogul?
