The Rise of Almería Grows in Span

As the second half of the season unfolds, UD Almería are attracting more and more comparisons with the team that celebrated their rise to La Liga in the 2021-22 season, also under Rubi’s leadership. The Vilassar de Mar (Barcelona) coach left the club, returned, and once again instilled a winning mentality in Almería, steering them to a successful campaign after a difficult start to the season in the second division of Spanish football. The team is currently in great form, boasting an impressive fourteen match unbeaten run in the Segunda División.

In addition, the Almería squad has maintained direct promotion status for five weeks, spending four of those weeks at the top of the Segunda División. At the same time last season (two days into the second half), 2021-22 Almería had 46 points—three points more than the current team, who have 43 after their match against Huesca in the 23rd day of the competition.

This comparison highlights how closely the current squad follows the one that got the move, a promising sign for fans and management. Rubi has found the right tone with the players and understands the dynamics of the locker room, as well as the demands of the club president.

Although there is almost a full round of matches remaining, Almería are firmly on course to realize their ambitions of returning to the top flight of Spanish football. The current squad stands out sharply from that of the 2021-22 season, as young, emerging talents from the club’s training ranks begin to make a name for themselves under Rubi’s leadership in the Segunda División. It is evident that the Catalan coach is getting the best out of these young players, who are asserting themselves alongside the senior team.

Interestingly, the Almería team of the 2024-25 season has a stronger attack, having scored 43 goals compared to 39 for the historic team that achieved the promotion. However, they also conceded more goals, letting in 29 goals to 17 after 23 matches the previous season.
