I remember that as a young child, I would often hum a song that was playing on repeat on the radio. It was the theme song for Expo 67, titled One day, one day. The melody of the song was very catchy. The kind of song that sticks in your head without wanting to get out of it for a bit. At the time, obviously, I didn’t know that it was a Stéphane Venne song.
In the 1970s, when I was a teenager, I got to know the songwriter Stéphane Venne better. And it is particularly three great performers, three great voices, who contributed to making me love his songs.
First of all, there was Isabelle Pierre, this performer gave off an air of freedom when she sang the song Children of the futureand it was a huge success. Then there was Renée Claude, who sang among other things: It’s the beginning of a new time et You will find peace. When she sang Stéphane Venne’s songs on stage, time stood still and she captivated us with her luminous presence. She magnified her songs. And what can we say about the singer Emmanuelle, who sang And it’s not over. Endowed with a remarkable vocal range, this performer, who had studied classical singing, made this song her own. Shivers guaranteed every time she sang it.
-When I think about it today, I tell myself that Stéphane Venne was Isabelle Pierre, Renée Claude and Emmanuelle combined. They were his holy trinity of voices. Three women who contributed greatly to making us know and love her unique work.
Stéphane Venne can rest in peace. The songs he created, in the shadow of his performers, are among the eternals of the Quebec repertoire. He remains, without a doubt, one of our greatest songwriters.
