MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Alexander Zverev was hampered by a bird feather at the Australian Open and was warned for cursing during his quarterfinal against Tommy Paul.
Second-seeded Zverev was trailing in the second set – a set he went on to win – when Paul saved two break points. With the match on the line, chair umpire Nacho Forcadell called a let and ordered a point replay when he saw a white feather fall into Zverev’s eye line while the German player was in motion back.
” What? A feather? There are millions of them on the field,” Zverev said, approaching the official while brandishing the pen.
-Zverev took to the net to take a break before getting back to work, but Paul quickly held his serve.
Zverev was already heated earlier in this match, when a spectator shouted “out” during a point. Zverev complained to Forcadell, who asked the crowd not to shout during the points. After losing the next point, Zverev was warned not to show too much frustration.
