This Monday, January 20, the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States, city councilor Grégory Doucet and the City of announce they are leaving Elon Musk’s social network.

The mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, announced this Monday, January 20, that he was leaving the social network X, formerly Twitter. This withdrawal comes on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States. Like many elected officials or individuals, the councilor points to the takeover of the platform in 2022 by billionaire Elon Musk. “The promise of direct, unhindered speech between citizens is no longer kepthe writes. No, it is now the law of the strongest that governs this social network. The fiercest communities reign supreme, favored by an arbitrary and uninhibited algorithm. X is today an assumed instrument of destabilization, driven to weaken our democracies“.

Now inactive, his account will not however be deleted to avoid being “used without my knowledge“. A decision that he does not rule out taking on other social networks: “Of course, I’m aware of Mark Zuckerberg’s recent allegiance to the Trump-Musk method. This change of heart from the boss of Meta does not bode well for the platforms that are Instagram or Facebook“. And calls on the European Union to “seize tools to legislate” in order to “guarantee freedom of expression and protect the right to information“.

The City of Lyon’s X account will also no longer be active. Only communications from “crise grand public” are maintained on the social network. LinkedIn, Facebook or Bluesky will now be preferred.
