Nigeria: 98 dead after tanker explosion

The death toll from the explosion of a tanker truck on Saturday in central Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, rose to 98, emergency services said on Monday.

The toll shows “98 dead” and “69 injured,” said Abdullahi Baba-Arah, director general of the Niger State Relief Agency (NSEMA), after a previous toll of 86 dead provided on Sunday. .

On Saturday around 10:00 a.m. (09:00 GMT), a tanker truck carrying 60,000 liters of gasoline had an accident at the Dikko intersection, in Niger State, on the road linking the federal capital Abuja to the city of Kaduna.

A crowd then gathered near the truck to collect the gasoline that was spilling onto the road when the truck exploded. Around twenty shops were also destroyed by the explosion, according to emergency services.

The most populous country in Africa has experienced inflation above 30% for a year, fueled in particular by the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in power since May 2023.
