LIVE | Trump’s inauguration (take 2): watch his speech

Trump, who overcame indictments, criminal prosecutions and two assassination attempts to win another term in the White House, is sworn in as the 47th president, taking over the country as Republicans take control unified Washington and set about reshaping the country’s institutions.

Here is the schedule of official events surrounding the second inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States.

12:20 p.m. | “National emergency” at the border with Mexico

President Trump begins his list of actions. “First, I am going to declare a national emergency at our southern border,” he also said about immigration from Mexico. “Any illegal entry will be stopped immediately. We will begin the process of returning millions and millions of illegal aliens to where they came from.”

He also says he will designate “the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.”

“I was saved by God to make America great again (make America great again),” says the new president, referring to the assassination attempt he survived in 2024 during a rally in Pennsylvania.

In his first speech as the 47th president, Mr. Trump also said that “America’s golden age begins now.”

Chief Justice John Roberts swore in Mr. Trump for a second presidential term.

A transition team spokeswoman says Donald Trump will order the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali, Alaska, in his first executive orders.

Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told the social platform until the Obama administration changes it in 2015.

11:07 a.m. | Canada can breathe…for now

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal argue that Trump will not impose tariffs on Canada on the day of his inauguration.

The two major American dailies write that Mr. Trump would instead sign an executive order on Monday for an investigation into alleged unfair trade and monetary practices by Canada, Mexico and China.

10:50 a.m. | Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance arrive at Capitol Hill ahead of their inauguration

Biden and Trump head to the Rotunda. Mr. Biden said he felt “good” in response to a question about his state of mind as he entered the Capitol with Mr. Trump.

Also in attendance are Jill Biden, Melania Trump, Doug Emhoff, JD Vance and Usha Vance.

10:42 a.m. | Biden Trump leaves the White House together

Biden and Trump left the White House after spending about 35 minutes in a private meeting. They got in a limousine to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony. This will take place in less than two hours.

The two men shared the same vehicle, as did Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, chair of the bipartisan Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump have been bitter rivals for years. But the fact that the outgoing president and the incoming president travel in the same vehicle to the inauguration ceremony is consistent with political traditions.

10:05 a.m. | Vladimir Putin congratulates Trump

In a video call with members of the Russian Security Council just before Mr. Trump’s inauguration, Mr. Putin said: “We hear the statements of Mr. Trump and members of his team about their desire to restore direct contacts with Russia, which were interrupted without our fault by the outgoing administration.

“We also hear his statements about the need to do everything to prevent the Third World War,” Mr. Putin said in televised comments. “We certainly welcome such an approach and congratulate the President-elect of the United States on taking office.”

Putin said Moscow was willing to discuss a possible peace deal in Ukraine, adding that it should not result in a short truce but a lasting peace and take into account Russia’s interests.

10:04 a.m. | The Trumps arrive at the White House

The Trumps met the Bidens on a gold-decorated red carpet, exchanging greetings and posing for photos before a private meeting over tea and coffee.

Mr. Biden told Mr. Trump “welcome home,” after the president-elect got out of the car. He then put his hand around Mr. Trump’s arm to escort him into the residence.

Trump will sign an executive order declaring that the federal government would recognize only two genders: male and female, a White House official said.

This executive order rescinds portions of an executive order signed by President Joe Biden on his first day in office, four years ago. Mr. Trump’s executive order could restrict access to medical care and sports competitions for some transgender people.

The official clarified that only two genders will be recognized on passports and visas.

9:25 a.m. | Trump to issue executive orders on immigration

Trump will issue a series of executive orders aimed at reshaping U.S. immigration policies on his first day in office, ending access to asylum, sending troops to the southern border and ending end to birthright citizenship, said a White House official who will take office.

It is unclear how he will implement some of his executive orders, including removing automatic citizenship for anyone born in the country, while others are expected to be immediately challenged in court.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to provide insight into some of the executive orders expected later Monday.

Immigrant communities were bracing for the crackdown that Mr. Trump had promised throughout his campaign and leading up to his rally on Sunday, just before his inauguration.

A powerful victory rally Sunday marked President-elect Donald Trump’s first full day back in Washington since the election. The Republican celebrated his return to the White House by projecting defiant optimism despite deep divisions on the eve of his inauguration.

Fans filled most of the more than 20,000-seat Capital One Arena to hear a performance by Kid Rock, who performed All Summer Long despite a mix of cold, rain and snow outside. Other personalities to take the stage included billionaire Elon Musk and Lee Greenwood, whose song God Bless the USA served as Mr. Trump’s re-election campaign anthem.
