Algeria delivers a large cargo of LNG to Tunisia

Algeria has shipped a large cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Tunisia to meet growing energy demand, exacerbated by winter temperatures. This initiative marks a new stage in energy cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

On January 18, 2025, the ship “honor gas” docked at the port of Bizerte, carrying a cargo of 5,200 tonnes of liquefied natural gas. This delivery comes at a critical time, when gas consumption in Tunisia has increased by 35 % compared to previous months due to the drop in temperatures.

The cargo, carefully transported and unloaded by Tunisian authorities, was partially used to fill domestic gas cylinders, a basic necessity for Tunisian households in winter. 2600 tons were specifically intended for this use, according to the director of the Bizerte gas distribution center.

A strategic response to an energy crisis

Tunisia, which faces recurring challenges in the energy sector, relies on regular imports to stabilize its supply. Algeria, the main gas supplier to Tunisia, plays a crucial role in this balance.

This new delivery is part of a strong energy partnership between the two countries. Already in December 2024, a similar cargo was sent to support Tunisian energy demand. Tunisia depends largely on Algeria for its natural gas and liquefied gas needs, particularly to supply its households and certain key industries.

Algeria’s central role in the region

Algeria is one of the largest producers of natural gas in Africa and a major player in global energy markets. With a well-developed infrastructure for the production, liquefaction and transportation of natural gas, it has the capacity to quickly respond to the needs of its regional partners.

The delivery of LNG to Tunisia also reflects Algeria’s efforts to strengthen its economic and energy cooperation with its neighbors. These exchanges are not limited to commercial transactions, but also demonstrate a regional solidarity facing economic and climatic challenges.

Important support for Tunisia

The current situation in Tunisia highlights the importance of these deliveries. With a growing dependence on imported energy, particularly in winter, the country needs continued support to guarantee a regular supply to its citizens. The arrival of this cargo made it possible to stabilize the local market and meet the strong demand for domestic gas in the northern regions, particularly affected by the cold.

This energy cooperation between Algeria and Tunisia is not limited to one-off exchanges. It reflects a broader strategic vision, in which Algeria asserts itself as a reliable and indispensable partner for its neighbors.

The shipment of this LNG cargo once again confirms the importance of energy exchanges between Algeria and Tunisia. In a context where energy issues are taking on an increasingly crucial dimension, these bilateral partnerships contribute to strengthening the economic and social stability of the two countries.

With its abundant resources and modern infrastructure, Algeria appears well positioned to continue to play a central role in the energy security of its neighbors, while consolidating its place on the regional and international energy scene.
