The head of British diplomacy, once very critical of Donald Trump, praises his “grace”
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Monday praised the ” grace “ of Donald Trump, adding that the latter was not a “go to war”. Labor, then in opposition, had in 2018, during Donald Trump’s first term as president of the United States, described the latter as a “sociopath with neo-Nazi sympathies” and of “tyrant with a wig”.
During an interview on BBC Radio 4, David Lammy, head of British diplomacy since July, estimated that “in this role (…) you had to be realistic, that is to say you take the world as it is, and not as you would like it to be”. “We must take into account that 77 million Americans voted for him”he said.
In September, he accompanied the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, for a dinner with the billionaire in New York. “The Donald Trump I met (…) had incredible grace, he was generous, very keen to be a good host, very funny, very, very, very friendly, very warm I must say about the UK, our royal family and Scotland”added the head of the Foreign Office. From his dinner with Donald Trump in September, David Lammy says he learned that “this man is in no way a warmonger”.
Keir Starmer, whose center-left Labor Party is historically closer to the Democratic Party, is trying to get closer to Donald Trump.
