American burns down congressman’s office over TikTok ban

Placed in police custody, the young man admitted to having started the fire in the shopping center including the office of Congressman Glenn Grothman in response to “recent discussions about banning TikTok”.

The temporary ban on TikTok in the United States has caused reactions in many ways. While some cried for long hours, others had more extreme reactions. In Wisconsin, a 19-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody, accused of setting fire to the office of Congressman Glenn Grothman, reports the New York Times.

Not having a Tiktok account, the latter voted in favor of the law requiring the social network to cut ties with its parent company, Bytedance or risk being banned last April.

Minor and moderate damage

In detail, the fire occurred in the Fond du Lac shopping center, inside which Glenn Grothman’s office is located. The flames were reported around 1 a.m., with police arriving first and trying to contain the fire while firefighters arrived.

“The exterior of the building suffered moderate damage and the interior, where the fire spread, suffered minor damage. The fire was brought under control within five minutes and no injuries were reported,” said the Fond du Lac Fire Department in a statement.

The suspect said he started the fire “in response to recent discussions about banning TikTok,” according to police. At the time of the events, the social network had in fact been inaccessible for a few hours in the United States, having since been restored thanks to Donald Trump.

“Acts of violence, in any form, are not tolerated and we remain committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our community. I am grateful to our officers for responding quickly by helping to extinguish the fire and locate the suspect in this arson,” Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein told local news channel WISN.
