Bart De Wever shakes his partners for federal training: “It’s time to lower the landing gear, 14 days left”

“It’s time to lower the landing gear. There are 14 days left”: trainer Bart De Wever on Sunday encouraged his partners to conclude discussions for the formation of a new federal majority without further delay.

“The socio-economic aspect remains difficult”recognized Mr. De Wever at the New Year’s reception of the N-VA Antwerp.

The presidents of the five parties expected to form an Arizona coalition will meet this Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to discuss a new revised version of the trainer’s socio-economic note on taxation, pensions and the labor market.

During this reception on Sunday, Mr. De Wever was very discreet about the progress of the negotiations. “I’m not going to tell you what I’ve been busy with these past few days in Brussels”said the mayor of Antwerp in front of the activists. “There is nothing to celebrate about the situation they have put this country in. We will soon know if it will be up to us to clean out the Augean stables”he said.

The presidents of the five parties expected to form the future federal majority therefore resumed their negotiations late Sunday afternoon on the basis of the socio-economic note revised by trainer Bart De Wever.

These discussions did not restart in plenary configuration, but rather in a bilateral mode, each president speaking individually with the trainer, specified Georges-Louis Bouchez. It was still unclear on Sunday evening whether these various bilaterals would be followed in the evening or at night by collective negotiations.

After a day devoted to institutional issues on Saturday, the presidents of the N-VA, MR, Engagés, CD&V and Vooruit must discuss this Sunday the once again revised version of the socio-economic note from trainer Bart De Wever. This concerns the most sensitive issues between the five parties, namely taxation, the labor market and pensions.

Antwerp “much safer”

Mr. De Wever mainly focused his speech on the victory of the N-VA in Antwerp last October and the defeat of the “Red Army” (the communists of the PVDA/PTB, editor’s note). He also welcomed the management of the finances of the city of Antwerp which, according to him, “are healthy again for the first time in centuries.”

The mayor of the port city also ruled that his city was “much safer” Today. “The drug mafia remains a scourge, but crime figures have fallen by a third”. In any case, Mr. De Wever already has the municipal elections of 2030 in mind. “Victory in 2030 will not be achieved in six years, but today”he insisted.
