Truce in Gaza: Israel releases 90 Palestinians after Hamas frees three hostages
Israel released 90 Palestinian detainees this Monday a few hours after three Israeli hostages were freed by Hamas, as part of the ceasefire between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamist movement in the Gaza Strip devastated by more than fifteen months of war. The truce came into effect on Sunday morning almost three hours late, Hamas having delayed providing the list of three Israeli hostages to be released the same day. The movement reported “complications on the ground” and of “the continuation of the bombings”. Late in the afternoon, a Hamas leader declared that “the three hostages” had been “delivered to the International Committee of the Red Cross” in Gaza City, in the north of the Palestinian enclave. The Israeli army later confirmed their arrival in Israel.

Fires in Los Angeles: firefighters worried about strong winds this Monday
American firefighters battling the fires that have ravaged Los Angeles for days and killed at least 27 people are preparing for a return of strong winds on Monday. The two main fires which destroyed nearly 16,000 hectares and wiped out entire neighborhoods of the second city in the United States are now more than 50% contained, according to the authorities. A lull in winds this weekend allowed authorities to lift evacuation orders in many parts of the city, allowing thousands of residents to return to their homes. But the US weather service is forecasting dry and windy weather on Monday, with gusts up to 130 km/h. “It’s the last […] we hope so” episodes of strong winds to hit the coastal city, Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom said Sunday on MSNBC.

The emergency law for Mayotte examined in the National Assembly
The deputies begin on Monday the examination of the emergency bill for Mayotte, the first text of the Bayrou government to be debated in the hemicycle. There is little doubt about its adoption given the imperative to accelerate the reconstruction of the archipelago devastated by Cyclone Chido. Judge “insufficient” by many deputies, this text – comprising 22 articles, mainly exemptions from town planning rules and some social measures – was widely adopted in the Economic Affairs Committee last week. And this, even if the rapporteur of the bill, the deputy for Mayotte Estelle Youssouffa (Liot), had deplored during the debates an elaborate text «sans consultation» local elected officials, and who “remains largely silent on essential subjects such as immigration”.
