Killer of “ hype“. Such is the life of Lorenzo Sonego in this Australian Open. After putting an end to the journey of an 18-year-old expected to be one of the leaders of his generation – João Fonseca – in the second round, the Italian stopped the epic revelation of the tournament in the round of 16.
Opposed to Learner Tien – 19 years old, 112th in the world, from the qualifications and notably the winner of Dannil Medvedev -, Sonego won 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in 2h25 this Monday on the outdoor hard court from John Cain Arena.
The current 55th in the ATP ranking thus validated his first ticket for a Grand Slam quarter-final, after three missed attempts against Diego Schwartzman, Karen Khachanov and Roger Federer, respectively at Roland-Garros in 2020 and 2023, and at Wimbledon in 2021.
Sonego, ranked 55th in the ATP rankings, will face the winner of the upcoming match between Frenchman Gael Monfils and American Ben Shelton, seeded No. 21 in the quarter-finals of the Australian Grand Slam.
