six dead in fire at retirement home in Belgrade

“I can unfortunately confirm that six people lost their lives in this establishment in which elderly people lived,” Luka Causic, head of the sector for emergency situations, told RTS public television.

Six people were killed and seven others injured in a fire that broke out overnight from Sunday to Monday in a retirement home in Barajevo, an outlying district of Belgrade, an official from the Serbian Interior Ministry announced.

“I can unfortunately confirm that six people lost their lives in this establishment in which elderly people lived (…) Thirteen people were saved”Luka Causic, head of the sector for emergency situations, told RTS public television. “It’s a great tragedy, but it could have been worse”he added.

30 people were in the retirement home

According to Causic, 30 people were in the retirement home when the fire broke out at 3:30 a.m. local time. The seven injured were taken by emergency services and treated by the Belgrade military hospital.

Early Monday, searches were still underway to ensure that no fire remains, “and the cause of the fire will be established in the coming hours”again according to the manager. The head of the emergency sector added that the nursing home was isolated, but fire crews arrived quickly.
