Key information

  • Armed conflicts represent the greatest risk to global economic growth in 2025.
  • Escalating geopolitical tensions are significantly shaping the global risk landscape.
  • The humanitarian crisis in Gaza will be at the heart of discussions at the Davos summit.

A recent survey by the World Economic Forum (WEF) reveals that armed conflict poses the greatest risk to global economic growth in 2025. The finding highlights the growing fragmentation of the world as world leaders prepare to meet at the annual Davos summit. More than 900 experts from diverse fields, including academia, business and politics, ranked conflict, encompassing wars and terrorism, as the top threat for the coming year. Extreme weather events, which dominated concerns in 2024, now take second place in the latest risk assessment.

Mirek Dusek, Director General of the WEF, highlights that escalating geopolitical tensions and erosion of trust are significantly shaping the global risk landscape. It highlights that leaders face a critical moment: either collaborate to build resilience or risk exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. The WEF meeting is scheduled for January 20, with high-profile speeches from figures including U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Key risks

Discussions will focus on the ongoing situations in Ukraine, Syria and Gaza, with particular emphasis on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
