This is the first time in her career that Svitolina has dominated Kudermetova, after two defeats in 2017 and 2019. She did so after a strange match as the Russian led 4-1 double break before Svitolina took control of the court and only lost… one of the following twelve games.
“I think it’s mainly a mental victory,” added Svitolina. “It’s very hard to keep it together when nothing about you smiles. My staff helped me stay in it and I have to thank them.”
Kudermetova wasn’t quite in her right mind during Svitolina’s comeback. She brought the medical team onto the court at 5-4 in the first set by pointing and pressing on her stomach.
Svitolina contre Rybakina ou Keys
Svitolina, ranked 27th in the WTA, will face the winner of the match between Kazakh Elena Rybakina, seeded No. 6, and American Madison Keys, seeded No. 19, who will face each other this Monday in the quarterfinals.
-Svitolina, who is playing her first tournament of the season at the Australian Open, is having an exemplary run so far. She dominated the Romanian Sorana Cirstea (6-4, 6-4), the American Caroline Dolehide (6-1, 6-4), and the Italian Jasmine Paolini, seeded n°4 (2-6, 6-4, 6-0). This is his second quarter-final in three majors after Wimbledon 2024.
Kudermetova, after only two matches won in the last eight Grand Slam tournaments played, will have reassured herself about her ability to obtain some result at this level after eliminating the Australian Olivia Gadecki (6-1, 6-1), the seeded n°22 Katie Boulter (7-6 [3]2-6, 6-2), and against the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, seeded n°15 (6-4, 6-2).
