Serie A: An ex-Basel player deceives Sommer but Inter Milan beats Empoli

Inter Milan, labored in the first period, outclassed Empoli (3-1) after the break on Sunday, to come back to three points behind leader Naples, although with a game in hand, during the 21st day of the Italian Championship.

The reigning champions dominated, but it was not until the 55th minute that Lautaro Martinez freed San Siro with a clear strike from 20 meters.

Denzel Dumfries doubled the lead with a header (79), before Sebastiano Esposito, a former FC Basel player loaned to Empoli by Inter, reduced the gap (83). Six minutes later, Marcus Thuram definitively reassured the Nerazzurri fans with his thirteenth goal of the season.

Thanks to this fourteenth victory of the year for only one defeat, Inter prevents Naples, which had temporarily increased its lead to six points with its success against Atalanta (3-2) on Saturday, from taking off.

The 2025 title should be played out between Napoli and Inter, since Atalanta, 3rd seven points from the lead, is going through a tricky patch and Juventus (5th) and AC Milan (8th) are already behind.

Inter’s overloaded schedule, which has already played five matches since the start of the year, could make the difference, while Naples only has to concentrate on the championship.
