European football: Still beaten, Tottenham sinks into crisis

Tottenham suffered a fifth defeat in six Premier League matches, Sunday at Everton (3-2), the sixteenth, which they are only four points ahead of after 22 days.

The victory against Liverpool in the semi-final first leg of the League Cup, on January 8, was only a deceptive ray of sunshine in the middle of the clouds which increasingly threaten Ange Postecoglou.

The “Spurs” coach is in fifteenth place with only four points more than Everton, who have a match in hand to play on February 12 against leader Liverpool.

In his defense, the Australian was deprived of around ten players on Sunday (Vicario, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie, Bentancur…) including Dominic Solanke (knee), who was added to the list this week injured people.

But its defense once again took on water from all sides against the “Toffees” not known for their offensive drive: in the league, Everton had finished nine of their eleven previous matches without a goal scored.

Symbol of this helplessness, Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring after a nice number in the area (13th, 1-0), his first goal in 17 Premier League matches.

Former winger Iliman Ndiaye, starting from the halfway line, dribbled past Radu Dragusin and placed a breaking shot into the top corner of Antonin Kinsky (30th, 2-0).

The Czech goalkeeper repelled a shot from Idrissa Gueye (26th) and a header from James Tarkowski (45th + 6), but he could do nothing on a header from Calvert-Lewin deflected by the unfortunate Archie Gray (45th +7, 3-0).

Dejan Kulusevski (77th, 3-1) and Richarlison (90th +2, 3-2) alleviated Tottenham’s suffering at the end of the match.

Everton pushes the red zone to four points and gets its head back after six league matches without a win (three draws then three defeats).
