President-elect Donald Trump’s team is studying radical solutions for the reconstruction of Gaza, including a controversial project to temporarily “relocate” part of the Palestinian population to Indonesia, according to a source cited by NBC News. This proposal is part of a broader reflection on the future of the two million displaced Palestinians. “If we don’t help the Gazans, if we don’t improve their lives, if we don’t give them a glimmer of hope, there will be a revolt,” says the source close to the matter.
The question of the reconstruction of Gaza remains central, as does that of the temporary displacement of its population. Indonesia is among the destinations envisaged to welcome some of the Palestinians. However, this idea of ”relocation” raises serious concerns among Palestinians and their Arab allies, who potentially see it as a first step towards permanent forced displacement from their land.
Steve Wittkopp, Trump’s Middle East envoy, is expected to play a key role in implementing these plans. He plans to establish a “near-permanent presence” in the region to oversee not only the current ceasefire, but also these long-term solutions.
At the same time, the immediate humanitarian situation remains worrying. The delivery of aid continues to be a problem, with Israel fearing that Hamas will divert some of the resources. Famine, the spread of disease and the general deterioration of living conditions are worsening in the enclave.
